Acclaimed Artist Samia Halaby: Following Exhibition Cancellations to Artistic Vindication

It seemed like a near wonder to walk away from a conversation with this pioneering abstract painter without incident. Not merely due to the precarious wooden stairs leading to her Manhattan studio, but because some view the veteran digital art pioneer as a perceived security risk.

Retrospective Ban

Back in December 2023, Indiana University canceled what was meant to be the premier American exhibition of the artist’s work. The retrospective had been a long time in preparation, yet she was notified via a brief abrupt message from the gallery head citing unspecified safety issues. She believes the underlying cause was the museum’s desire to avoid association from pro-Palestinian voices following the events of October 7.

Months later, a separate institution suddenly scrapped the launch party for a separate exhibitions and took down a painting titled Golden Six Heroes, which commemorated the flight of inmates.

Honors Amid Controversy

Now, following facing cancellation, Halaby is being honored with the international art accolade for creative expression. Is this vindication?

Not exactly, Halaby remarks in her studio. What we’re seeing is a split. Those who were always supportive stayed that way. Nobody has shifted, each side has intensified their stance.”

Halaby stresses that it was not the university that cancelled her, but the leadership—likely guided by political directives. During the Trump era, activism on universities faced aggressive crackdowns.

Nevertheless, Halaby is truly pleased to be granted the award, especially since it originates in Norway—a government recognized for its historic solidarity with the people of Palestine.

“The British one can separate into the beautiful people displaying signs that get them arrested, and the administration.”

A Life of Movement

A native of historic Palestine in the pre-war era, the artist was displaced to another country during the war of independence. Although she has visited her birthplace multiple times, the artist is unable to return permanently due to government restrictions.

To do so, I’d need to be on a visa,” the artist says, “leaving me at the mercy of the authorities. They could revoke it without warning.”

Art as Craft, Not Just Expression

Instead of working from personal feeling, she treats art as a skilled practice rooted in physics and method. I research the physics of illumination, the human perception,” Halaby affirms. People that think art is only emotional outpouring are mistaken.”

The artist argues that viewers appreciate her paintings because they recognize the environment they experience reflected in them.

On Politics and Perspective

When asked about current world leaders and artistic liberty, Halaby suggests thinking on a broader scale:

“When one look at centuries of history, one understands that someone like a controversial president is similar to a pest on a camel’s back. We suffer—since that creature is in control making a mess. Yet there is much more we inhabit.”

In spite of obstacles, Halaby remains forward-looking, devoted to her work and the powerful value of free speech in a ever-changing world.
