Fierce Winds Cause Tens of Thousands In the Dark in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents encouraged to stay indoors as severe gales strike the region.

Severe winds hitting velocities of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have caused around 90,000 properties without power and led officials to halt over 100 air travel services, as reported by regional news sources.

The gales are affecting the entire southern region and southern parts of the northern region, according to the country's meteorological service.

New Zealand authorities have announced infrequent high-level wind alerts - the top caution category - in central regions encompassing Canterbury and Wellington.

Locals have been encouraged to avoid going outside, refrain from journeys, and prepare for more utility disruptions.

Broad Impact and Crisis Measures

The electricity loss appears to be affecting residences mainly in the South Island, while authorities say that power was being gradually reinstated.

Local media have stated that in various locations homes have lost their roofs, whereas utility poles and vegetation have been toppled by the gusts.

In Wellington, a person was killed after being struck by a wooden fragment at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a woman was swept into approaching vehicles on a road by a powerful blast, in a moment that was recorded in a popular vehicle recording.

Aircraft services entering and leaving the city have been halted due to the weather, whereas various routes and public facilities are shut down.

At the same time Canterbury officials have declared a crisis declaration, to support emergency management operations.

Labor Protests Amid Harsh Conditions

The wild winds on Thursday come as tens of thousands of educators, medical professionals and government employees take part in what has been termed a "mega strike", requesting higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

Yet the intense climate has pressured them to change some of their plans, with several external protests relocated inside or abandoned.

Similar gusts are affecting the nearby nation, causing a period of extreme heat to the nation's interior regions.

Officials have announced fire bans for fear of wildfires.
